Q. What is the Nursing & Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme?
A.The NAHRLS is a component of the Australian Government’s National Health and Hospital Network Reform agenda and aims to remove some of the barriers rural and remote health professionals face in accessing leave.

The NAHRLS will support and recruit suitable locums to enable rural and remote professionals to leave their post to take leave, and enable organisations to back-fill their positions to support ongoing service delivery. The scheme supports all locum recruitment, travel and accommodation costs.
 
Q. What types of health disciplines will be required for locum work?
A. The NAHRLS supports locum requests for a number of health disciplines including nursing, midwifery and allied health, including dental health. Please contact NAHRLS or visit the NAHRLS Job List page for all the current locum vacancies.
 
Q. What type of skills and experience will I need to fill a NAHRLS locum placement?
A. NAHRLS will be seeking nurses, midwives and allied health professionals with a range of skills, qualifications and experience to fill NAHRLS locum placements. All health professionals need to have current unrestricted professional registration or credentialing in their field. Q. What registration is required?
A. All health professionals must be registered in Australia and your registration or credentialing must be valid throughout the period of your locum placement.
 
Q. What is the eligibility criteria to become a NAHRLS locum?

A. To be eligible to work as a locum under NAHRLS and receive the additional allowances associated with the scheme, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals need to:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Australia.
  • Have current unrestricted professional registration or credentialing in their field of practice.

Q. How long are the locum placements?
A. Locum placements will be up to a maximum of 14 days and be required right across rural and regional Australia.
 
Q. How do I apply to become a NAHRLS locum?
A.You can apply online through our Jobs List page, either for a specific vacancy or as an open application to become an active candidate on our database. You can also request an application pack be mailed out to you if this is more convenient.      
 
Q. What allowances or incentives are associated with the scheme?
A. NAHRLS locums will be eligible for a fixed meal and daily incentive allowances, regardless of locations of locum placement. Please contact the NAHRLS team on freecall 1300 NAHRLS for more information on these allowances.
 
Q. What level of remuneration can I expect?
A. Each health service or practice requesting the locum support will advise NAHRLS of the proposed base rate and will vary depending on the locations. Therefore there is no set pay rates per locum assignment. Individuals will be advised of the rates applicable to the location seeking the services of that particular health professional.
 

Q.Will NAHRLS cover my travel costs?
A.The NAHRLS Team will arrange all travel from point of origin in Australia to the assignment site and return. Travel will be arranged from the nearest major airport and we ask individual’s to arrange travel from their home to the airport.

Q.Who will arrange my accommodation?
The NAHRLS Team will arrange and book suitable accommodation for you at your placement site for the duration of your locum work.
